This painting is part of a series called “Underneath it all” which was created after coming across alarming statistics revolving around the loss of transgender women’s lives due to violence, those statistics/facts moved me to create a body of work solely to highlight that, underneath it all, we are one and the same – human beings. Regardless of race, culture, religion, sexual orientation or socio-economic positions, I believe and want to demonstrate a sense of universality, oneness; for to deny basic human rights is to deny humanity and the vitalness of human connection.
My hope is that the surreal worlds I create through my artwork provide a different interpretation to demonstrate that trans lives are (and always have been) an integral part of our society and contribute to the rich, diverse, inclusive spectrum in which we all belong... Their lives mattered then and still matter today.
